Lionel Richie Takes Country Album to HSN for Live Concert
Thursday, February 16, 2012 - 17:27

HSN, the shop-from-home network, is launching a live concert series on March 16, and they've enlisted Lionel Richie to help them kick it off. For the "Say You, Say Me" singer-songwriter, the first "HSN Live" concert is an opportune time and place to perform songs off his upcoming country album, "Tuskegee."
"I always say that when I write songs they are not just for New York and LA, they are for everyone between," Richie tells Billboard.com. "[HSN] is the perfect partner to help invite people into my life and into my home with this album Tuskegee."
"Tuskegee," out March 26, is Richie's collection of duets with big names in country music performing many of his hits. One of those collaborators, Kenny Rogers, has been confirmed to join him on stage to perform "Lady" at the March 16 broadcast, which starts at 8 p.m. EST.

Sports, Fame, and Social Media: Jeremy Lin Scores
Wednesday, February 15, 2012 - 16:41

Jeremy Lin has been causing a stir with his incredible athleticism that has led the New York Knicks to a six game winning streak. Lin, whose $80,000/year income (modest by basketball standards) was not even guaranteed before last week, is finding himself swept away in the incredible attention his streak is gaining. Nowhere is this is more apparent than on his social networks:
- Lin’s Twitter feed @JLin7 is adding thousands of new followers each day – It's currently at nearly 240,000, up from 18,000 followers three months ago.
#Jeremy Lin has been the top trending topic on Twitter in the month of February, with #Linsanity reaching #14 overall on February 10th.
About 450,000 fans currently “Like” his Facebook page.
Merchandisers can't keep up- Lin jerseys are sold out everywhere online.
Lin is a perfect example of how social media has set the archetypal slow build to fame on it's ear. Let's not forget Rebecca Black, or Antoine Dodson (Hide yo kids, hide yo wife...) both of which had social media giant YouTube directly contribute to their overnight rise. In this instance, Lin has a much more substantial base for his own ascension to fame- as a professional basketball player, his actions are broadcast across the country and fans are not required to search for the material in a sea of online content. So now what?
We know that the world of social media is a fickle place, and Lin only has a small window to project his own voice into the media cloud surrounding him to cement the image and message he wants associated with his name (and ultimately his brand.) It's not something he can do alone AND continue to be a superstar on the court. Capitalizing off the sudden interest and digital growth he's experiencing could be a far more lucrative decision than any basketball contract, and he better not wait until after the buzzer to get started.
